Sebastien Alouf aka Sebal | The discipline of foolishness | 24.09.2022 - 13.11.2022
Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1974 and raised by a family of graphic designers for 2 generations, Sebastien Alouf was nurtured by images and art since childhood.
He attended Ken Institute of Arts & Design and Belgian cinematography school INSAS, shaping the images used in his artwork, which at the time was mostly inspired by teenage boredom, a taste for disruption, and school desk drawings.
His first career as a director of commercials and video clips was an opportunity to make a living while mastering his second-degré approach to all subjects; distancing himself from the function and filling the gap with derision. Analogue media and reproduction are strong supports of his creative mindset. He becomes a visual craftsman creating fanzines, collages, montages and organising workshops with kids for inspiration.
2012 marks a turn into an authentic artistic life, dedicated to deconstructing what seems well-shaped
to find its essence and often nonsense, especially from socially constructed standards such as beauty, popularity, or success and power. They are expressed with a typical feigned naïveté; The discipline of foolishness becomes his motto.
UN is the affix punctuating his art throughout any media output; UNbroken, UNordinary, UNrealistic; UNlinear UNruly pUNk art.
His artistic universe is continuously expanding from a hot dense state through a multimedia arborescent approach. Pictures, film, painting, sculpture, cardboard models, ceramics… An outburst of forms offering touchpoints as well as distance to access the profound substance of his work. The coherence hits the one willing to take the journey and explore.
What may seem shattered, is extremely consistent. It’s the UNexpected paradox that builds Sebal’s vision: the BETAverse.
