Wim Baes | ‘Mimosa’ | 03.12.2022 - 29.01.2023
Wim Baes (1977 Knokke-Heist), lives and works in Ghent. He spent most of his childhood and younger years surrounded by flowers, pots and plants: either at the flower store of his grandfather, or in between the plants his father grew as a florist. Both ancestors painted in their spare time; his grandfather even hung his painting in between the flowers in his shop. It comes as no surprise that Wim developed a passion for flowers, vases and especially for colour. Baes’s calling to paint crystallised quite late in life but since a few years he’s painting full-time, obviously inspired by the flowers, plants, objects and colours that formed him visually.
His work can be defined as lyrical abstract, in addition you notice the influence of masters like Matisse and
Cezanne. More or less abstracted bottles, pots and jugs, are arranged into still lifes, experimenting simultaneously with form and colour. He researched various types of brushwork and expressions of texture, in addition to the suggestion of depth by the use of composition. The extent to which an object can be abstract or figurative, is a reoccuring subject in his paintings. Above all Baes is a colourist, looking for the perfect harmony in colours and beauty in the chaos that surrounds him.
With ‘Mimosa’ he pays homage to his father who arranged the most beautiful flowers and pots into breathtaking compositions of form and colour on a daily basis.
