( s o o n ) presents 'CHERRIES ON THE CAKE'
For the 10th show at ( s o o n ) gallery we do something special. Not a solo this time but a group show ‘Cherries on the cake’.
17 artists, a mix of new and known faces, not only present their proverbial cherry on this deliciously scrummy art-cake. In addition, they ARE the cherry on the cake. It’s a great pleasure to work with them and bring their work together.
You’ll find work by artists that already showed at ( s o o n ) : Bram Vanderbeke, Sebastien Alouf, Wim Baes, Lieven Herreman, Emma Terweduwe, Lisa Tiemann, Dona’ Gillon, Arnaud Kool, Flo Bastiaensen and Michiel Deneckere.
And there’s work by artists that have not yet shown at ( s o o n ) but who’s work conquered my heart: Bieke Buckinx, Delphine Cuelenaere, Hanna Ilczyszyn, Chiara Lammens, Alexandra Puscas, Noa Verborgh and Conrad Willems.
Come by and taste a piece of that fantastic cake!

( s o o n ) presents Michiel Deneckere ‘Midnight in a perfect world’
( s o o n ) starts the new season with a very young, immensely talented painter from Ghent, Michiel Deneckere. We present his solo expo 'Midnight in a perfect world'.
Michiel Deneckere, a master's student at the Luca School of Arts in Ghent, is deeply influenced by artists like Léon Spilliaert and Giorgio de Chirico, whose stylised, alienating depictions of cities resonate in his work. His paintings, inspired by literature, cinema, and the Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro (clair-obscure), focus on themes of alienation, the surreal atmosphere of urban life, and the interplay of light and darkness. Deneckere's works depict an imagined, cinematic version of Ghent, where architecture and atmosphere overshadow narrative, capturing the tension between the dream of perfection and the harsh reality beneath.
You are most welcome to discover Michiel Deneckere's new works during the open weekends or by appointment.

( s o o n ) presents Flo Bastiaensen ‘You can't milk a cow with your hands in your pants’
Flo Bastiaensen is inspired by the banality of everyday life, in all its complexities and contradictions. She strives to find a balance between figurativism and abstraction. A play between reason and emotion to suggest a scene or situation that is open to interpretation. She captures fleeting moments of tension and serenity. Her aim is not only to create a visual experience, but also to engage in an emotional and intellectual dialogue with the audience. The viewer is invited to ponder about the stories behind the portraits.
The title of Flo Bastiaensen’s first solo expo is an ode to the beauty of craftmanship, professionalism and respect for the trade. Rolling up one's sleeves, both literally and figuratively. She inherited this dedication to craft from her father and it is reflected in all the works in the exhibition. Flo Bastiaensen often explores mundane, familial issues in this series. The recurring textiles and contrasts, on the other hand, are a tribute to the Flemish Masters. This nod to the past not only emphasises the artistic finesse of their time but also underscores the timeless value of craftsmanship and respect for the trade.

( s o o n ) presents Arnaud Kool 'Prince d'Orange'
We start 2024 with another painter from our beautiful capital Brussels. Arnaud Kool presents ‘Prince d’Orange’, a new series of paintings inspired by his neighbourhood, a lost-and-found design chair and the lush nature in his own garden. Arnaud Kool started out as a graffiti artist and his drawings are immensely detailed. Only later he got interested in painting on canvas.
‘Prince d’Orange’ is the second time Arnaud Kool deliberately works on a series of paintings with the same inspiration. His first series ‘Les roches rouges’ was exhibited at Artflex in Ixelles and completely sold out. ’Prince d’Orange’ develops the idea of a series with more freedom. The vintage garden chair, a Rio model by Emu that he found on the street, and the lush (imagined) vegetation of his garden take centre stage in each painting. But the depiction of these elements is less rigid and more fluid.
You are most welcome to discover Arnaud Kool’s new works during the open weekends or by appointment.

( s o o n ) presents Dona' Gillon ‘Memento’
To kick off the new season we present you Dona’ Gillon, an abstract painter based in Brussels.
Born in Sao Paulo, she spent a happy childhood in Spain and it’s this period that still nourishes her creative inspiration today.
Dona’ advocates a playful, intuitive approach to her work, which in fact conceals more subtle and profound themes. Through the use of colours and her spatio-temporal relationship with the surface, she introduces us to a dreamlike universe on the border of abstraction and figuration, between the visible and the invisible. By stacking layers, several levels of reading are offered to us: in the materiality and in the symbolism that surrounds it.
Her work is an invitation to take one’s time, to travel and to let one's emotions rise to the surface. Between dream and reality, contemplating her work, we discover that painting is also poetry.

( s o o n ) presents Emma Terweduwe & Lisa Tiemann
This time ( s o o n ) brings together the Belgian textile designer Emma Terweduwe and German sculptor Lisa Tiemann. At first sight, two very different bodies of work that somehow fuse wonderfully well.
For Terweduwe it is the first expo that combines so much of her work in one place. Before coming to ( s o o n ) gallery she will present her work mid-April at Salone del mobile in Milan.
Lisa Tiemann, based in Berlin, has shown extensively in Germany, all over Europe and even in New York. Last February she was selected to show her sculptures outside at the Van Nelle Factory during Art Rotterdam.

( s o o n ) presents Lieven Herreman ‘Unfinished’
Ghent-based photographer Lieven Herreman brings ‘Unfinished’ to ( s o o n ) gallery. The expo shows a collection of photographs made without a prior purpose but they are all linked by the themes of decomposition, fragmentation and alienation. Lieven Herreman is obsessed by the frailty of things, he often depicts elusory frictions by hiding, dividing, using unusual formats or unbalanced compositions.
’I see what I don’t see, but I’m also blind for what is visible.’ - Lieven Herreman

( s o o n ) presents Wim Baes ‘Mimosa’
Ghent-based painter Wim Baes bring ‘Mimosa’ to ( s o o n ) gallery.
The works pay homage to his father who arranged the most beautiful flowers and pots into breathtaking compositions of form and colour on a daily basis. Baes’s still lifes can be described as lyrical abstract, he mixes abstraction with figurative images and plays with colour, brushwork and texture. Above all Wim is a colourist, looking for harmony and searching for the beauty in the chaos surrounding him.
