Michiel Deneckere, a master's student at the Luca School of Arts in Ghent, is deeply influenced by artists like Léon Spilliaert and Giorgio de Chirico, whose stylised, alienating depictions of cities resonate in his work. His paintings, inspired by literature, cinema, and the Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro (clair-obscure), focus on themes of alienation, the surreal atmosphere of urban life, and the interplay of light and darkness. Deneckere's works depict an imagined, cinematic version of Ghent, where architecture and atmosphere overshadow narrative, capturing the tension between the dream of perfection and the harsh reality beneath.
You are most welcome to discover Michiel Deneckere's new works during the open weekends or by appointment.
